Jean-François Lisée has a law degree and a master’s in communications from the Université du Québec à Montréal. Since the 1970s, he has been very active in the media through his journalism career in Québec, France, and the United States. Abroad, he has written for Le Monde, Libération, and L'Express, and was a Washington correspondent for La Presse and L’actualité. In 1990, he earned the Prix Jules-Fournier, an award from the Conseil supérieur de la langue française for the quality of his writing.
From 1990 to 1992, Mr. Lisée served as assistant editor-in-chief of L’actualité. He returned in 2005 as columnist and blogger on the topic of Québec and international politics for the electronic version L’actualité.com.
In the 1990s, Mr. Lisée worked closely with premiers Jacques Parizeau and Lucien Bouchard as advisor, strategist, and writer. The referendum strategy and international relations were among his priorities. In the early 2000s, he was guest researcher at the Université de Montréal’s Department of Political Science and at the Institut d’études politiques de Paris’s Centre d’études et de recherches internationales. In 2004, he helped found the Université de Montréal’s Centre d’études et de recherches internationales, whose team of distinguished researchers he led until recently. He was elected Member of the National Assembly for Rosemont on September 4, 2012.
Jean-François Lisée is the author of more than 10 books, including Dans l’œil de l’aigle, which received Canada’s highest literary prize the Governor General’s Award. He also published the collection of essays Nous, which addresses questions of identity, and Pour une gauche efficace, which seeks to reconcile left-wing values with economic imperatives.
